Understanding Orthodontic Headgear with Iconic Orthodontics

At Iconic Orthodontics, under the expert care of Dr. Brandon Morgan, we aim to provide comprehensive orthodontic solutions tailored to each patient’s needs. One such solution is orthodontic headgear, which is used to adjust the alignment of teeth and guide jaw growth in younger patients.

Types of Orthodontic Headgear

Orthodontic headgear typically combines a series of straps and elastic bands on the outside of the head that connect to braces inside the mouth. Some designs may incorporate head caps for additional anchorage or hook directly onto the teeth. Here are the main types of headgear used at Iconic Orthodontics:

Cervical Pull

Cervical pulls are designed to correct an overjet, a type of malocclusion where the top teeth protrude over the bottom teeth. This headgear uses straps attached to braces to guide the upper jaw into proper alignment, helping to correct the bite and improve overall dental function.

High Pull

High pulls are primarily used to correct open bites, where there is no contact between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed. They can also be effective in treating certain overbites. By using straps that connect higher on the head, this headgear helps to align the upper teeth and jaw.

Reverse Pull

Reverse pulls are used to correct underbites, where the lower teeth extend past the upper teeth. This type of headgear often uses rubber bands attached to the braces on the top teeth, pulling the upper jaw forward to improve bite alignment.

When Is Headgear Necessary?

While braces are effective at shifting teeth into proper alignment, headgear is often required to address more complex issues involving the alignment of the upper and lower jaws. This can significantly enhance tooth function and improve facial aesthetics.

Thanks to advancements in orthodontic treatments, headgear is not as commonly prescribed as it once was. However, when needed, it is typically recommended for 12 to 14 hours daily over the course of 1 to 2 years.
